(Some of) What we did this week…

Your meals are light in the darkness 🕯️

It’s been a dark and difficult week, hasn’t it?

We’ve been holding our Belfast leaders, members, and their local community in our thoughts over the last few days, as well as everyone else in the Local Welcome family living in cities which have also experienced far right activity and/or threat. The feeling of fear and uncertainty for everyone living in these communities is very real, and our hearts go out to everyone impacted.

If you are worried about your safety (or any of your loved ones) at this time, we recommend reviewing and sharing these resources:

It’s a difficult to be a kind and compassionate Local Welcome leader at a time when it feels like everything is going backwards rather than towards the change we hope to see in our communities. A leader said something in the UK leader group chat this week which really inspired and resonated with us: ”I can’t stop a riot… but I can influence the atmosphere around the table in [my hometown]”.

Sending hope and solidarity,

Celia, Hannah, Andrew & Rhiannon - The Local Welcome Team

Nick’s taking on a 170 mile bike ride for Local Welcome 🚴

Our Chair Nick Gretton is taking on the 170 mile ‘Way of the Roses’ to raise funds for Local Welcome! 🚴 He’s shared the following words on why he’s doing this:

“Local Welcome is a small charity that breaks down barriers between refugees and local people through food. I’ve supported them as a trustee and I know it works, so I’m hoping you’ll help me make more of these meals possible.

On 18th June 2026 I’m riding the 170-mile / 275km Way of the Roses from Morecambe in the West to Bridlington in the East, with the support of friends Pete & Paul. I need to finish it within 2 days but with the right conditions I might even make it in a single day.

Either way, thanks for your support!”
